An Inspired Gift Guide For Shopping Small This Holiday

The holiday season is inching closer and for many, so is the inspiration to gift those we love. If you’re here, reading this, you probably already know the importance of shopping small, and better, have experienced the joy of doing so. “Choosing better” and buying from small businesses and independent makers is a commitment, one that rewards both buyer and seller and contributes to a sustainable, circular distribution of wealth. It tells the maker, with your dollars, “Yes! More of this!” and in return you receive a treasured item with a story. It also requires a little bit of thinking and acting ahead, but that’s a minute sacrifice for the amount of good that comes from it.

When To Start Holiday Shopping From Small Businesses

In the Hina Luna Guide To Holiday Shipping in 2021 I shared our collective motto for navigating holiday shopping and shipping this year — the earlier the better. How early? Today! Really. When buying from small businesses and makers, especially online, this is even more applicable. Giving ample time to prepare your order is especially important as there is often a very small team behind the scenes (it’s just me here!) and some treasures you find may even be made to order (here’s why).

Getting on it early not only minimizes — dare I say eliminates? — holiday stress for both you and the small business you’re shopping from but it also leaves space for more inspired gifting (I’ll elaborate on this concept more in the coming weeks). When we choose gifts at the last minute they’re less likely to be thoughtful.
